From Bondage to Victory

1 John 5:1-5

Living as an overcomer, according to Scripture, is all about living in the position of victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. It is living in the state of peace, even when experiencing tribulation (Jn. 16:33); reacting godly and doing good deeds in the face of evil (Rom. 12:21); and overcoming Satan by means of the word of God (1 Jn. 2:13-14; 4:4).  However, the supreme privilege is the work accomplished by Jesus Christ in setting us free from sin, restoring us into the presence of God, and preparing our heavenly inheritance (Rev. 21:7). The Scripture reveals the reality of our standing and extends a warning against the work of Satan as he counterfeits God’s word. Unfortunately, like Adam and Eve, we too often listen and follow his deceptions rather than trusting God’s words (Ps. 16:11).

John wrote his epistle to inspire believers with confidence concerning the genuineness of their salvation (1 Jn. 5:13). Yes, before the completed Scripture, the first century Christians struggled against the attacks of the false teachers who elevated their truth above the accepted truth. How were they to know who was genuine and who was a fraud? The answer was essential to their eternal destiny. Were these believers still in bondage or were they overcomers?

As we live out the reality of being more than conquerors, John sets the record straight by providing the truth and the evidence that we are genuinely victorious in Christ.

The evidence:

  1. The source of victory – God – 1 John 5:1
  2. The standards of victory – love and obedience – 1 John 5:2-3
  3. The strength of victory – faith – 1 John 5:4-5

The practice:

  1. Loving God is realistic to those birthed by God
  2. Loving God is functional upward, outward, and inward
  3. Loving God is the victory over loving the world
