Building Confidence through Discernment – by Dr. Glenn Jago

Building Confidence through Discernment
1 John 4:1-6

There is a real evil and danger lurking within our Christian culture that has nothing to do with our present political candidacy. It is much more destructive than any government policy and has the greatest potential of immobilizing the believer with doubts and fears. This evil is Satan’s attack against the person and work of Christ. It is dangerous because if believed, it will rule the thoughts and actions of the believer.

John set out to provide numerous tests to give believers confidence, against the false prophets in their day, that they possessed genuine salvation. John knew that in order to combat uncertainty, they had to fight against these false prophets by exercising discernment. Yes, it is possible to live with confidence in our world of doubt. To accomplish this, John provides two powerful insights for discernment.

I. The means of discernment – 1 John 4:1-3
A. The command
B. The cause
C. The criterion
D. The center
II. The might of discernment – 1 John 4:4-6
A. The position
B. The power
C. The particularity
