Jesus Christ came to a people fanatical in practicing religion, but deficient of true spiritual life. John writes his gospel, exposing this deficiency, by revealing the truth of the sufficiency of Christ as it relates to true saving faith against a shallow faith; it is Disciples of Christ compared to superficial disciples of religion. In America, there is a 77% claim, by adults, to being Christian, while at the same time there is a 77% decrease in religious influence. Why the disparity? In this passage, Jesus answers by exposing the difference between genuine faith in Christ and a superficial profession of faith.
