Church of the Open Door

Women’s Ministries

Women have been a vital part of the ongoing ministry of the Church of the Open Door since its humble beginnings in Philadelphia back in 1936. Their ministries now reach throughout the community with a multiplicity of emphases and focuses…including prayer, Bible study, missions, and a host of other specific ministries designed to meet the needs of those in our congregation and beyond.

2018-2019 information will be posted in August.

Special Events

Annual Retreat – This was our 19th Annual Retreat! It was held February 23-25, 2018 at the Eden Resorts and Conference Center in Lancaster, PA  This is a time of worship, testimony, message, prayer and fellowship. Our speaker is Ellie Lofaro. Ellie Lofaro is a respected Bible teacher, inspirational speaker and humorist. Brochures are available at the church — here is a scan of the brochure. Scan of 2018 COD Retreat  (this scan does not have the tear off page).

She has authored five books and her articles have been published in numerous magazines in the US and abroad. She has addressed audiences on five continents and has also taught in both men’s and women’s prisons across the globe. On two occasions, she has been honored by Focus on the Family as being “The Best of the Best.” Ellie’s message is a wonderful blend of plainspoken truth, common sense practicality, and disarming humor. A serious student of Scripture and a keen observer of the culture, Ellie has developed a unique teaching style that touches the heart, stimulates the mind, and nourishes the soul — thus inspiring her to establish Heart Mind & Soul Ministries. Completely convinced of God’s love and His mandate to “go and tell,” Ellie has committed her life to sharing the Great News. She speaks internationally, has authored five books and taught a weekly nondenominational Bible Study for 15 years.

Ellie and her husband, Frank (CEO of Prison Fellowship International), are native New Yorkers. They reside near the nation’s capital where they raised three very likable children who turned into terrific adults. Ellie enjoys travel, any large mass of water, photography, good food and being around a dinner table for a very long time. She does not enjoy cooking, cleaning or dieting.

The 2019 Annual Retreat will be held March 8 – 10, 2019 at the Eden Resorts and Conference Center in Lancaster, PA. Our speaker is Ellie Lofaro, returning for a second year! Additional information will be coming out in August.

Ladies Spring Brunch – The brunch was held on Saturday, April 28, 2018. This was an outreach event where the ladies of COD reach out into the community to encourage friends, neighbors and family. The ladies enjoyed a morning of uplifting music and our speaker/author, Allison Hilliard; as well as a fabulous breakfast / brunch menu while we fellowshiped with one another. This year and next we will be at the Talamore Country Club.

Annual Kick-off – was August 24 2017 at 7 pm
This all-important meeting introduced our theme for the year and set the stage for all ministries and activities. Our guest speaker was one of our missionaries, Esther Sawyer. Esther has worked in the Neighborhood Crusades ministry since 1987 and currently serves as Administrator. We are thankful for her testimony and the godly message that she brought. We enjoyed wonderful fellowship and learned about the many opportunities for spiritual growth and service for the ladies of Church of the Open Door.
