Peace on Earth? — Absence of Peace

Micah 3:1-12

As we approach the Christmas season, there seems to be an intense effort for many to seek after peace and goodwill toward all men. What is it about Christmas that seems to evoke that desire? Many pursue peace, but very few ever find it. Characteristically, its absence leads to delusion and frustration until out of exasperation they seek for it in all the wrong places. In our world of economic prosperity, why is goodwill so hard to find?

Micah is the prophet of the Lord sent to the people of Israel during times of prosperity and national peace. However, they abandoned the worship of the living God. Worship of idols was the obsession of the day. Therefore, God sent Micah to warn of impending judgment and their need to repent. Their solution was to find prophets who preached to their felt needs. They wanted to hear about peace and prosperity, not God’s revelation.

There is little difference between Micah’s days and our culture. Church of the Open Door must continually desire God’s revelation even when it confronts our lifestyle. If we are to experience ongoing peace and goodwill, our dependence must always be Jesus Christ. What is the cause and what is the solution?

Reasons/solution:

  1. Abuse of power over people – Micah 3:1-3
  2. Abuse of power over prophecy – Micah 3:5-7
  3. Abuse of power over prosperity – Micah 3:9-12
  4. Accurate preaching offers peace – Micah 3:8

Insight:

  1. Discernment requires knowing the truth – Romans 16:18
  2. Peace may be readily shared, but seldom realized – Isaiah 48:22; 57:20-21
  3. Peace is not an emotion, but a gift from Christ – John 14:27; Col. 1:20
