One of the great threats to the health of any local church is the thinking that Jesus Christ and his Gospel are insufficient. From the time of Eve, who was deceived by Satan in thinking God was withholding valuable information, this has been the tool and deception of Satan. Ironically, the church that pursues spiritual goals by means of worldly methods may experience an immediate result but it will only be temporal and it will not endure the pressures of life. Yes, the world may scoff at the foolishness and weakness of our faith in Christ, declare that we are intolerant and hypocritical, and even scoff at our exclusive approach to faith in Christ, but we can never discard the truth concerning the sufficiency of Jesus Christ and his Gospel. Fortunately, this struggle, at Colossae, provides insight into the message all local churches are to be proclaiming and practicing. The message that must remain at the center of our church, in all of its teaching and function, is Jesus Christ and his Gospel.
