Church of the Open Door

Engaging with the Body of Christ by Dr. Glenn Jago

Ephesians 2:19-22

The idiom,” Familiarity breeds contempt,” can be an expression used in personal relationships but it can also apply to one’s familiarity with God’s redemptive program. Unfortunately, the visible church is no longer viewed as vital, by virtue of the numbers of “Christians” leaving their local churches, in fact the church is often viewed as dead. Just because the visible church is not necessary for salvation does not mean it is not necessary at all. The problem is not that God has provided an alternative and we missed it; the problem is mostly believers do not understand what the church is. Therefore, fasten your seatbelts as we work through Paul’s letters and hear Paul say, “Believers, this is the church!”

Two crucial points:
I. The church, a unity, created only by Christ – Ephesians 2:11-18
A. Remember where we were – 2:11-13
B. Remember who intervened – 2:14-18
C. Unity is never man-produced – 4:3

II. The church, a union, consigned by Christ – Ephesians 2:19-22
A. Christ’s provision produces Christ’s product – 2:19a, 20
B. God’s presence produces God’s priority – 2:19-21
C. Holy Spirit’s power produces God’s permanence – 2:22
