Abiding in Christ in Marriage by Dr. Glenn Jago

Abiding in Christ in Marriage

Ephesians 5:1-2

We have already learned that Jesus Christ is our absolute source for living, which means our abiding in Him impacts every area of our life, including our marriage. Since the commission of Christ, working through us, is to bring His Father glory, then our marriage ultimately is about God’s glory more than our happiness. The ability to live with fruitfulness, by means of the same power that God worked through Christ, is directly related to Christ now working through us, yet it will produce genuine joy, even in the midst of marital struggles.

Paul presents the highest level of balance between doctrine and practice by contrasting two approaches to life, as driven by the realities of the doctrine of God’s sovereign determination and Christ’s loving sacrifice, described as the “put off” and the “put on.” When the believer properly approaches doctrine, then the practical begins to genuinely reflect the dynamic of what it means to abide in Christ and bring glory to God even in marriage.

Truth of knowing and of doing:

  1. Imitating God – Ephesians 5:1
  2. Walking in love – Ephesians 5:2
