Abram and Sarai had a problem that demanded a solution. They had received a revelation from God promising them a son; yet after many years, Sarai was still childless. So, in order to fix the problem, they strategized and worked until they could come up with a solution. Consequently, through their effort, they were able to have a son. However, it was not by the means of God’s promise, but rather through the means of the slave woman named Hagar. Paul then takes this illustration and exposes the error of anyone seeking salvation through their own effort.
How often do we, when facing problems, similarly seek a solution through our own effort? This is dangerous because our effort alone is incapable of bringing God’s results. Do you understand how this thinking can mean the difference between eternity in heaven and eternity in hell? Paul presents, for us, a strong case for our living by faith in Christ rather than our self-effort.
